I looked forward, once I retired, To doing what work had prevented. Alas, it’s not work that’s the problem, Life keeps getting in the way. I want to finish my book But eating gets in the way. The Icestorm

So beautiful. So treacherous. Each droplet, each sheathed twig, shimmers, As breezes nudge the branches. Avalanches of ice from the roof Jolt reminders of the danger. Diamond-like sparkles, reflecting harsh sunshine, Glint like mirror-shards, As more ice cascades from the roof. Ice covers unbroken snow on the hillside, Reflecting sunshine still too bright for direct vision. And then it’s gone. Melted under the unyielding sunshine, Warmed to life-giving running water, Portending Spring; But the beauty remains in memory, To be looked at during the next heat-wave in July.

On Chickens and Foxes and Puppies

The little circular path in the woods helped the dogs and me not to trample everywhere and everything indiscriminately.  It swung down the hill, along to the stream, then up to the lane before heading back to the house.   We moved many of the rocks and tree limbs but the bigger, leaves.   We used it three or four times a day to give all of us some fresh air and exercise.
